Crypto Scam Disrupts Apple Event

During Apple's highly anticipated September 2022 "Far Out" event, a crypto scam emerged on a fake YouTube stream. The scammer used footage from Apple's 2021 "Unleashed" event, attracting tens of thousands of viewers by exploiting Apple-related keywords.

The fake stream included an old interview with Apple CEO Tim Cook and falsely announced that Apple would purchase 100,000 BTC and host a giveaway. Viewers were prompted to send Bitcoin to a specified wallet in exchange for Ethereum airdrops. The video, titled "Apple Event Live. CEO of Apple Tim Cook: Apple & Metaverse in 2022," was later removed by YouTube for violating its terms of service.

This is not the first time such scams have occurred during Apple events. In 2021, over 165,000 viewers were duped by a similar fake stream.

Apple's Push into Digital Payments

Separately, Apple recently announced a "tap-to-pay" feature for iPhones, enabling merchants to accept contactless payments via NFC chips. This feature, integrated into Apple Pay, supports credit, debit, and digital wallet cards, including those from Coinbase and Crypto.com. The update is expected to simplify crypto payments for users.

Stripe, a company returning to the crypto market, will be the first to offer the tap-to-pay feature on iPhones.

YouTube Criticized for Inaction

YouTube has faced criticism for failing to adequately address crypto scams. Recently, the platform was condemned for allowing fake Elon Musk videos promoting bogus cryptocurrency giveaways. These incidents highlight the ongoing challenge of combating crypto-related fraud on major platforms.
