Australian Woman Pleads Guilty to Retirement Fund Theft

A 24-year-old Melbourne woman, Jasmine Vella-Arpaci, has pleaded guilty to stealing millions of dollars from Australian retirement funds and laundering the money using cryptocurrency. The scam targeted 26 customers of major superannuation funds, including HESTA, Hostplus, and Rest Super.

Scope of the Theft and Laundering

Vella-Arpaci, who was 21 at the time of the crimes, used identity theft and phishing scams to steal over AU $3 million (approximately USD $1.96 million). The stolen funds were transferred to Westpac debit cards and then sent to Hong Kong, where they were laundered through the purchase of cryptocurrency and diamonds. She received AU $147,000 in Bitcoin as her share of the proceeds.

Investigation and Charges

During the investigation, authorities discovered that Vella-Arpaci possessed over 1,400 stolen documents, including passports, driver’s licenses, and bank account details. She has been charged with conspiracy to defraud and conspiracy to deal with the proceeds of crime. Vella-Arpaci is currently on bail and is scheduled to appear in court on November 30 for further proceedings.
